ASEAN Celebrates a Decade of Defence Cooperation

Vientiane, 26 May 2016 - The ASEAN Defence Ministers today commemorated the 10th Anniversary of the establishment of the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM). The Ministers, who were in Vientiane for the 10th ADMM, took part in a series of events organised by the Ministry of National Defence of Lao PDR as the Chair of the ADMM this year. All ten Ministers and the Secretary-General of ASEAN attended a tree planting ceremony at the Kaysone Phomvihan Academy of National Defence and attended the opening ceremony of the ADMM Photo Gallery at the Lao People’s Army Museum.

Secretary-General Le Luong Minh, in his message on the occasion, said that, “the 10th Anniversary of the ADMM this year represents a milestone in the evolution of the highest defence cooperation mechanism within ASEAN. Having been established only in 2006, the ADMM has moved from dialogue and confidence-building to more concrete practical activities, especially with its partners”. The Secretary-General also said that ASEAN looks forward to further contributions by the ADMM to peace, security and stability in the region.

ASEAN Defence Ministers Strengthen Cooperation Ties

The ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) has continued to grow as a robust and active mechanism that contributes to regional peace and stability as the region heads to ASEAN Community 2015.

Since its establishment in 2006, the ADMM has provided a platform for continuous strategic dialogue, consultation, and practical cooperation,said Secretary-General of ASEAN Le Luong Minh yesterday. “This is one channel how the defence sector is contributing to the community building efforts of ASEAN,” said SG Minh at the 7th ADMM that was held in Brunei Darussalam on 7 May 2013.

Issues such as activities for 2013, implementation of the ASEAN Political Security Community Blueprint, ASEAN centrality, as well as cross-sectoral coordination were center to the discussion themes during the ASEAN Defence Ministers and the Minister representing the Defence Minister retreat. The session took place in the historical city of Siem Reap on 16 November 2012.

The 6th ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting

ASEAN Ministers of Defence met to exchange views on ways and means to further enhance regional security and defence cooperation. This was one of the outcomes of the 6th ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting in Phnom Penh on 29 May 2012, under the chairmanship of Cambodia.

This year, the ASEAN Defence Ministers agreed to shorten the interval of the ADMM-Plus meetings as reflected in the Concept Paper on the Review of Frequency of the ADMM-Plus meetings which the Ministers adopted in the meeting today. With the new interval of meetings, the ADMM-Plus will meet every two years from 2013 onwards as compared to once in three years previously.
