ASEAN Defence Ministers and their Plus Counterparts Reaffirm Commitment for Regional Peace and Security at the 2nd ADMM-Plus

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, 3 September 2013 - Three years since its establishment, the ASEAN Defence Ministers Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus) has cemented its role as a premier venue for strategic dialogue in defence and security issues among ASEAN and its eight Dialogue Partners with practical cooperation constituting the main thrust of the process. This is the second time the ASEAN Defence Ministers met with their counterparts from eight of ASEAN Dialogue Partners, namely Australia, China, Japan, India, Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Russia, and the United States.

In their second meeting, the Defence Ministers reviewed the remarkable progress of the ADMM-Plus’ cooperation  in the five priority areas of cooperation, namely humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, maritime security, peacekeeping operations, military medicine, and counterterrorism.  

The ADMM-Plus has brought together militaries of the eighteen nations to enhance their networks in a multilateral diplomatic setting and provided them with opportunities to develop capabilities to collaborate with their regional partners through joint exercises.

The ASEAN Defence Minister's Meeting Plus (ADMM-Plus) Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief and Military Medicine Exercise (HADR & MM EX) came to an end yesterday with the visit of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar `Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, Minister of Defence and Supreme Commander of Royal Brunei Armed Force (RBAF).

Enhanced commitment, friendship and cooperation were among the major achievements of this year's said the Deputy Minister of Defence, Dato Paduka Haji Mustappa bin Haji Sirat, the guest of honour at the Appreciate Night of the ADMM-Plus HADR & MM Ex when delivering his speech last night to almost 3000 military officers and personnel from eighteen countries. Dato Mustappa had been greatly impressed by the high level of commitment shown by participating nations. "It is gratifying to see the high level of commitment and professionalism demonstrated by all the participants during the exercise," he said."Within a few days of working together, we have forged closer friendships and cooperation with each other," he said.

The ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) has continued to grow as a robust and active mechanism that contributes to regional peace and stability as the region heads to ASEAN Community 2015.

Since its establishment in 2006, the ADMM has provided a platform for continuous strategic dialogue, consultation, and practical cooperation,said Secretary-General of ASEAN Le Luong Minh yesterday. “This is one channel how the defence sector is contributing to the community building efforts of ASEAN,” said SG Minh at the 7th ADMM that was held in Brunei Darussalam on 7 May 2013.

 

Opening Ceremony of ADMM-Plus HADR & MM Ex

The opening ceremony of the inaugural ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief and Military Medicine Exercise (ADMM PLUS HADR & MM Ex) HADR & MM Ex was held today at Multi National Coordination Centre (MNCC) which marks the official start of the exercise.

The opening ceremony was officiated by Major General DatoPaduka Seri Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saifu lMulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin, the Commander of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces. Present to witness the officiating ceremony were the senior officials and personnel from all the participating countries.

During the opening ceremony, the Commander of RBAF activated the button which showcased a video montage that included a brief history of ADMM and ADMM- Plus, the arrival of the troops, exercise preparation and Force Integration Training (FIT). The ceremony concluded with a group photo session.

ASEAN Defence Ministers Reflect on Way Forward for 2013

Issues such as activities for 2013, implementation of the ASEAN Political Security Community Blueprint, ASEAN centrality, as well as cross-sectoral coordination were center to the discussion themes during the ASEAN Defence Ministers and the Minister representing the Defence Minister retreat. The session took place in the historical city of Siem Reap on 16 November 2012.
